Bulldog Homecoming 2014
The Bulldogs celebrated their homecoming on Friday, Oct. 10. Throughout the week there were many activities occurring, including dress-up days, an Air Band Competition, a pep rally, float building, and more, despite the rainy and cold weather that came in on Thursday.
During the week the senior high cheerleaders set up the dress up days for the annual spirit week. Monday students participated in “Pajama Day” where many looked as though they had just climbed out of bed. The winner for the day was Bethany Herl. Tuesday the students participated in “Red Carpet Day.” Bobbi Roberts and Caleb Knouf won with their formal attire. Wednesday the students teamed up as famous duos with the winning duo going to the Farmer and the Dell group. Thursday featured “Twin Day.” Students paired up as twins. The winners for the day were Carma Wolf and Mrs. Polifka and Tyler and Tanner Waggoner. Spirit week concluded with “Spirit Day” in which students were challenged to show as much Bulldog pride as possible.
On Thursday, the night started off with volleyball in for any interested high school student. The cheerleaders’ original plan was to play games outside and have a bonfire once it got dark; however, the weather permitted them from doing so. Starting at 7:00, Quinter High School Graduate of 2007, Natalie Metcalf, performed a show for the town and high school students to display the songs featured on her first album. Metcalf has been in L.A. for the last seven years working towards her musical career and finally produced her very first album.
After the concert the high school students took over the stage for the Airbands performances. A very popular activity from previous years, the cheerleaders are slowly attempting to bring the tradition back. This was the second consecutive year for Airbands. The Airband performances consisted of Evone Waggoner,Greg Waggoner, Leann Wolf, Andrea Hargitt, and Louise Werth, performing their own dance as football and volleyball players to the song Teenage Dream. The cheerleaders performed their dance to the song Timber. This year the cheerleaders’ dance was choreographed by their assistant coach Kirsten Lundgren. The final Airband group consisted of the senior football boys (Tyler Waggoner, Chad Mohler, Jason Werth, Brett Crist, and Devontae Goldsby). They performed their dance to the song Dota. The Airbands winner was chosen by the applause of the crowd, going to the senior football boys. Since there were only three airbands in the competition, the crowd rooted for an encore from all groups. After the Airbands, the high school students were invited back to the gym to play a variation of games using a volleyball.
Friday morning consisted of float building for each class and their sponsors. This year’s theme was different for each class. The freshmen had 80’s, sophomores 70’s, juniors 60’s, and the seniors 50’s. The freshmen class focused their float around the Pac Man video game. The sophomore float was a mix of all things 70s, including the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine, protesters, and hippies. The juniors brought back shades of Woodstock and the Beatles. The seniors focused on the popular 50s song, “Splish Splash,” encouraging the Bulldogs to “Splash the Trojans.” Due to the rain, the parade got cancelled, but the pep rally got moved to the high school gym where the grade school and high school gathered together with community members to cheer on the Bulldogs. The cheerleaders announced that the sophomore float won the contest with the seniors placing second.
Friday night’s game started off with the Annual Crowning of the King and Queen. Freshmen attendants were Abram Caasi and Peyton Havlas. Sophomore attendants were Lane Keith and Amber Kinderknecht. Junior attendants were L.T. Coburn and Kara Hinman. Senior King candidates were Chad Mohler, Jason Werth and Tyler Waggoner. The senior Queen candidates were Cassie Richardson, Hailey Kerns and Shelby Coburn. The Mini Homecoming Attendants were Cooper Havlas, son of Matt and Daryl Havlas, and Kyndal Johnson, daughter of C.J. and Kayla Johnson. The King and Queen, Tyler Waggoner and Hailey Kerns, ended the ceremony with the traditional kiss.
After the crowning ceremony the senior high football team faced the Logan-Palco Trojans, winning by a score of 54-34. After the football game, the high school students ended the homecoming week with the annual homecoming dance hosted by the sophomores. The dance lasted until midnight.
