QHS Hosts a Day for Academic Acknowledgments

On Tuesday, May 8 the entirety of the Quinter Junior/Senior High School along with some community members gathered in the gym for the Awards Day Assembly. During this assembly the students were recognized by their teachers and community for their efforts and academic achievements throughout this school year.

The assembly started off with the 2018 seniors being awarded the scholarships they had acquired throughout the year. The total amount awarded to the senior class was approximately $734,809 in scholarships alone, and $828,069 with grants added on top. This total is still fluctuating however because there are still scholarships that the students are waiting to receive in June.  These seniors had some pretty amazing scholarships from extremely gracious donors throughout the local area and could not have reached the total they did without them. Some of the major scholarships the students received include the following: The Horatio Alger for $10,000, the Hagan which is a renewable scholarship for $5,000 per semester totaling in $40,000 plus more in other benefits, the KU Pell Advantage for $10,900 totaling in $43,600 over four years, the Dane G. Hansen for $6,500 renewable for four years for a total of $26,000, the Dane G. Hansen Technical for $4,000 totaling in $8,000 over two years, the Pete Henry which every QHS student received ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 renewable for a total of 16,000 over four years, and Academic Scholarships from their respective colleges ranging from $1,000 to $36,000.

I am so proud of these seniors. They came to class everyday and worked diligently on scholarships. They had to do 15  every nine weeks and were still filling out scholarships on their last day of class with me,” commented QHS Counselor Mrs. Monica Countryman. “These scholarship numbers don’t just happen! This comes from hard work in and out of the classroom, involvement in activities, athletics, and organizations, establishing and maintaining good GPA’s and taking, retaking and preparing for the ACT through our Methods Test Prep.”

Following the presentations of scholarships, teachers handed out awards for students in their classes.  Students were recognized for maintaining straight As throughout every nine-weeks, having the highest grade point average, showing the most improvement, and also for working with a positive attitude.  Organizations gave out awards as well and highlighted the many achievements of the student body.

Mr. Toby Countryman, QHS Principal, gave out what he called one of his biggest awards, the Perfect Attendance Award.  This award went to juniors Codi Kentner and Kourtney Davidson, and seniors Kylie Crist and Rebekah Kitch.

To cap off the presentation, the seniors took part in an academic signing.  Each senior sat at a decorated table and signed an academic letter of intent for next year.  Mrs. Countryman read through each senior’s scholarships, as well as advice from the seniors. Parents stood behind their student as a symbol of their support as these seniors prepare for the next step in their lives.

All those in attendance were treated to a cookie and tea social following the ceremony sponsored by the QHS Student Council, while various representatives from universities were on hand to talk with underclassmen.
